LANDSCAPE WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS
I’m drawn to landscapes with a particular atmosphere or character – places that make me stop and look. From open countryside and coastal paths to quiet rural corners, I’m interested in what makes a place distinctive rather than simply reproducing how it looks. Working in watercolour allows me to respond quickly and intuitively to changing light, capturing not just the appearance of a scene but its mood and character.
Each painting is an original work, created in my studio and inspired by locations across the UK and beyond. Some pieces are painted en plein air, while others develop from sketches and studies made on location.
If you’re drawn to urban scenes, you may also enjoy my Cityscape Watercolour Paintings. For more intimate subjects, my Interior Watercolour Paintings explore light and atmosphere in quieter spaces. You can also read more about the process behind the work in my blog, Brushes with Watercolour.
Paintings marked SOLD are part of my archive; all others are available unless otherwise stated.
“We’ve spent many a happy day at our beach hut in Rottingdean and when I saw John’s painting capturing the scene on art_at_zerbs instagram I had to have it! I love the long shadows and the detail of the bike against the lifebelt, the reds against the grey. Concrete has never been rendered so atmospheric and alluring!
Tracking down John via his website was easy, he quickly responded to emails, offered me a choice of mounted/framed and a couple of days later he delivered it to my door.
I’m absolutely delighted with the painting – a little bit of joy to lift these difficult lockdown days.”
