Rain on the lane watercolour with WIP shots

Super brief post on the writing front tonight I’m afraid! This Friday at noon is the deadline for entries for this year’s Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour Exhibition and I haven’t started to compile anything towards my submission!

This means I have to dash off and get busy deciding what, if anything, I can submit this year!

I must admit that I’m already feeling some pressure. Out of all the open submission exhibitions that I enter, this is the one that means the most to me. It’s the exhibition that I’ve entered more than any other and the one that I’ve most aspired to be selected for. I had a painting selected last year for the first time and it was a really big moment for me – so the bar is now set perhaps a little unrealistically high!

So I hope you’ll forgive me if I leave you with the following work in progress images of a painting that I had much higher hopes for than I managed to achieve!

The tonal study
The preparatory sketch
First wash
Second wash on the lane and left hand side
Second wash on the right hand side and adding some darks
Rain on the lane, finished. (I think!)

Very, very good wishes, John. Fingers crossed for you! You deserve a place; have you noticed how far you’ve come in the last year?!!

    1. Thanks so much for this Patricia – so kind and generous of you! I do feel that last year heralded a bit a step change in my painting (which will stay with me regardless of whether I’m selected or not!). Last year I only submitted one small painting and was lucky enough to be selected. This year I submitted four of what I considered to be my best paintings of the past year. I think they announce the results next Friday (16th Feb) so not too long to have to wait!

I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about this
