Well it’s been just over a week or so since my window display went up at Starling Studios, and I’m delighted to report that I’ve already made one sale:
Over the years, I’ve become quite adept at ‘letting go’ of a painting – there are, however, some paintings that I still find it difficult to say goodbye to, and this is certainly one of them.
I can still vividly recall seeing this view, just before Christmas day last year. It was the also the last painting that I posted here in 2020, so to say goodbye to it almost exactly one year later has a certain poignancy to it.
The people that have bought this also purchased one of my paintings back in 2018 when I last exhibited during Brighton’s Artists Open Houses. As ever, it’s always such a huge compliment when someone buys one of my paintings and it means so much to me. Far beyond the financial element, the knowledge that a painting has really connected or spoken to someone, and that they value that connection sufficiently to want to live with it, well it’s just an amazing feeling.
The rest of the show will be going up today, probably as many of you may be reading this and, the levels of preparation (not least cellophaning up all of the works that will be going into a browser – one of my least favourite jobs!) hasn’t left any room for any new paintings this week.
The exhibition at Starling Studios opens on Friday night, with a preview from 5pm – 8pm. After this, the doors will be open daily, Monday to Saturday 11am – 5pm, Sundays 11am – 4pm with a late night shopping day on Thursday 16th December to 7pm, though to the Sunday 19th December.
If you’d like to meet me, I’ll be at the studios on the following days:
- Friday 10th 5pm-7pm
- Saturday 11th, 2pm – 5pm
- Thursday 16th, 2pm – 5pm
- Sunday 19th 2pm-4pm
All the information that you might need about this event can be found on the Starling Studios Pop Up Gallery page of my website, and I look forward to updating you all next week with how the opening has gone!

Congratulations on the sale. I see why they wanted it 🙂
Thanks so much Kim, really kind of you!
Looks like a morning two decades ago I spent in York, England. Beautiful artwork John.
Thanks so much for this, I really appreciate it (I also reckon that two decades ago would have been around the last time I visited York! I really should try to go again, it’s a beautiful city!)
Congrats on the sale and the exhibition!
Thanks for this David, hopefully it’ll look alright when I finally finish hanging it!
I’ve always said, nothing can improve a great painting like the addition of a dog.
It’s the one I would have bought.
Still love the one I have.
Thanks so much Mary, really kind of you on all fronts! (and this is still without a doubt the best depiction of a dog that I’ve ever achieved to date!)
It’s wonderful. With just a few strokes you’ve communicated a happy dog.
Thanks Mary, I must admit that one of the many things that I’ve enjoyed about watching Gary Tucker’s YouTube videos is how deftly he handles dogs – well worth a watch if you haven’t already seen them!
Don’t think I can make it, John, but best wishes for a successful show.
Thanks so much Rob, I’ve had some very positive early omens! Shame I’ve still got so much to do before the doors open!
